According to a report from Football Insider, Mason Mount is on Newcastle United’s shortlist. But it remains to be seen whether they can agree on a fee for the 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder in the coming months.

Mount has a contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2024, and the two parties have not been able to agree on a contract extension. Apparently, the Chelsea midfielder wants to be one of the highest-paid players at the club and the Blues are not willing to accept his demands.

Chelsea are now left with the option to cash in on him at the end of the season. They will not want to lose him as a free agent next summer. But recent reports have hinted that a compromise might be on the cards.

Mount will hope to join a club in the UEFA Champions League if he leaves Chelsea, and Newcastle United are certainly well-placed to secure a top-four finish this season. They have been hugely impressive throughout the campaign, and it remains to be seen whether they can finish the season strongly now.

Furthermore, Newcastle United are one of the richest clubs in the world and they have the financial resources to tempt Chelsea into selling their academy graduate. Mount is one of the most talented attacking midfielders in the country right now, and he could prove to be a quality long-term investment for Newcastle.

The Magpies need to add craft and goals to their midfield, and the England international would be the ideal acquisition. Mount is yet to enter his peak years, and he is likely to improve further with coaching and experience. Chelsea will probably regret losing the player in the long run. But they are powerless to stop him from leaving because of his contract situation.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to Liverpool as well. But the Reds might not be able to provide him with Champions League football. Furthermore, they do not have the financial resources to compete with Newcastle United either.

As per the report from Football Insider, James Ward-Prowse and Harvey Barnes are on the shortlist at Newcastle as well. It is evident that they want to add creativity and goals in the middle of the park this summer. It remains to be seen whether they can succeed in signing the 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder.
