Barcelona held a meeting with Martinez Rodriguez Nader, the agent of Fabricio Diaz, convinced he could fill the shoes of Sergio Busquets.

According to reputed Spanish journalist Gerard Romero on Jijantes FC, Fabricio Diaz is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Blaugrana met the 20-year-old midfield sensation’s agent, Martin Rodriguez Nader, this week. And the Catalan giants are reportedly convinced he can replace Sergio Busquets in the long run.

Fabricio Diaz is one of the best young midfielders in South America but has gone under the radar for much of his career thus far. The Uruguayan sensation started his youth career at La Paz Wanderers before joining Liverpool FC Montevideo in 2016. And he has progressed considerably in the last half a dozen years.

A defensive midfielder by trade, the 20-year-old has made over 100 appearances for Liverpool FC Montevideo, chipping in with five goals and seven assists. And Diaz will soon be in action during the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona among his prospective suitors.

Barcelona must scour the market for a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets. The veteran midfielder has regressed considerably in the last few years due to his advancing age. And the Barcelona captain will likely leave the club soon.

So it behoves Barcelona to lay down a succession plan for Busquets. And while Ilkay Gundogan might be a short-term replacement amid the latest updates, a long-term plan needs to be in place. Several players have thus popped up on Barcelona’s radar. And Fabricio Diaz has also emerged as a target for the Blaugrana.

The Catalan giants are now stepping up their efforts to sign the 20-year-old midfield sensation. And Barcelona met Diaz’s agent Martin Rodriguez Nader this week, possibly to initiate discussions over a move. Meanwhile, a report by SPORT claims that they are convinced the youngster can fill Busquets’s shoes.

It will be interesting to see if discussions between the Uruguayan prospect and Barcelona ramp up anytime soon. For now, the Catalan giants have seemingly made the first move to sign Diaz. And a summer departure seems likely for the youngster, possibly to Europe.
