According to Matteo Moretto, Matheus Nunes is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants dream of signing the 24-year-old, whose market value is €45 million, from Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers. But the player’s price tag is a stumbling block for the Blaugrana.
Matheus Nunes started his youth career at Ericeirense before embarking on a short stint with Estoril. But he rose in stature after joining Sporting CP in January 2019. And after a productive spell with the Portuguese giants, he arrived in the Premier League last summer by moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 24-year-old has blown hot and cold this season, thanks in part to the Midlands club’s travails. But Nunes has been a regular for Wolverhampton Wanderers, turning out 32 times thus far this term. However, despite the player’s inconsistencies, his market value has risen to €45 million. Meanwhile, he is a target for several clubs, including Barcelona.
Barcelona will likely enter the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window. That is because Sergio Busquets has entered the twilight of his illustrious career. And while the Barcelona captain might stay for one more season, the Catalan giants must identify his long-term successor.
In addition, Franck Kessie faces an uncertain future at Spotify Camp Nou. So it behoves Barcelona to scour the market for a defensive-minded midfielder. Several players, including Ilkay Gundogan, have thus emerged on Barcelona’s radar. But Matheus Nunes is also a viable target for the Blaugrana.
The 24-year-old is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can play as a holding midfielder. But Nunes’s price tag is an issue, and Barcelona cannot afford to sign the player from the Premier League club. In addition, he is a target for several high-profile Premier League clubs, including Liverpool.
Unlike Barcelona, Liverpool can afford to meet the market value of €45 million. So the Portuguese international is an impossible dream for the Blaugrana. So signing someone like Gundogan will be the ideal scenario for Barcelona, considering the Manchester City captain will become a free agent in the summer.
