Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly closely monitoring the progress of 17-year-old Spanish midfield sensation Alejandro Monserrate.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Alejandro Monserrate is gaining popularity in the market. Barcelona and Real Madrid are among the clubs keen on signing the 17-year-old Real Zaragoza midfield sensation. And the duo will face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid for the youngster.

Alejandro Monserrate is one of the best young prospects in his homeland. The teenage wonderkid has been setting age-group football alight in Spain while rising through the ranks at Real Zaragoza. And it is hardly surprising that his progress has been raising eyebrows across his homeland.

A left-footed midfielder, the 17-year-old midfield sensation is a budding playmaker. Also known as Jano, he possesses incredible vision while having an eye for a goal. At the same time, the young midfielder is capable of reprising different roles in the middle of the park. And his progress has captured the attention of several bigwigs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The two La Liga heavyweights are renowned for boasting the best youth divisions in Spain. And Barcelona and Real Madrid are constantly searching for the most elite young prospects across the globe. Having such an outlook has meant that Los Blancos agreed to a deal for Endrick, while the Blaugrana beat Real Madrid to Pablo Torre last year.

Barcelona and Real Madrid continue to remain in the market for the most prodigious young talents. And they have recently mutually shown interest in several players, including Luka Vuskovic. Alejandro Monserrate has now emerged on the two clubs’ radars.

Neither club will likely offer regular first-team football from the get-go. But Monserrate will have a better chance of featuring prominently if he joins Barcelona. The Catalan giants have had a youth-centric approach to team building, with Pedri, Gavi, and Alejandro Balde benefitting from Xavi Hernandez’s outlook.

But with Real Madrid scouring the market for long-term successors to Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, Monserrate might have a chance to become a regular for Los Blancos. So both teams can present their cases. And it will be interesting to see where the 17-year-old Spanish midfield sensation lands when he leaves Real Zaragoza.
