Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly interested in Gregor Kobel in the summer as they seek a solution to their goalkeeping problem.

According to Blick, Gregor Kobel is a target for Manchester United and Chelsea in the summer. The 25-year-old Bundesliga ace has impressed so far with Borussia Dortmund, who want to extend his contract. A move to the Premier League might prove tempting as the Swiss star demands a significant salary.

Gregor Kobel has proven his worth for Borussia Dortmund this season with outstanding performances. The Swiss international has attracted plenty of interest, with his club sitting at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Kobel had a long journey before he played at a top club like Dortmund. The Bundesliga leaders want to hand him a new contract with a substantial pay rise. The 25-year-old currently earns €4 million a year and reportedly wants a €12-13 million deal, making him one of the highest earners at the club.

Dortmund might consider paying appropriately if that wards off the interest from Premier League clubs. Manchester United and Chelsea are keen on Kobel and want to sign him in the summer. The two giants have issues in the goalkeeping department, and both are looking for a new long-term option.

While Manchester United are open to handing David de Gea a new deal, the keeper has already rejected their first proposal. He wants a salary close to his current one, something the club are not prepared to offer. However, there is a mutual feeling a new agreement could materialise, although the Spaniard is not a solution for the long term.

Manchester United have looked at players like Illan Meslier to become their new No.1 and cement his place for the long term. But with de Gea’s presence, any new arrival will have to bide his time unless they are ready to push the Spaniard immediately with their quality.

Kobel represents such a player, having played at the highest level with Dortmund. The Red Devils face intense competition from Chelsea, who are about to overhaul their goalkeeping positions. Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy are having doubts about their future and could depart in the summer.

Chelsea are also pushing for Meslier and could make a significant offer ahead of their rivals. They are also keeping tabs on Kobel’s situation to make a move. Graham Potter is not yet convinced about the long-term quality of his current keepers and could ask the club to sign a new star.

Kobel will make sense for the club’s future and easily possesses the quality that could trump Chelsea’s current stoppers. For now, Dortmund will try and hand him a new deal but could cash in if they cannot find an agreement with the 25-year-old Bundesliga ace.
