Chelsea remain keen on extending Mason Mount contract

Chelsea are keen on extending the contract of Mason Mount despite the 24-year-old Liverpool target appointing a new agent.

Fabrizio Romano via Caught Offside insists Chelsea remains eager to extend the contract of Mason Mount. The 24-year-old Liverpool target has not yet found a breakthrough with the Blues in contract talks. A recent new appointment of an agent has fueled exit talks.

Mason Mount remains one of Chelsea’s important stars despite his visible absence from the squad for recent games. While many in the media attributed it to the club’s decision after the stalling of contract talks, the reality of his absence was due to an injury.

The recent fitness trouble will keep him out of the England squad during the international break. While he could return to the squad soon, the 24-year-old’s future remains uncertain. So far, the midfielder has failed to agree on a contract extension with Chelsea.

Mount’s contract expires in 2024, with the club set to make a firm decision on his future. Chelsea are reportedly prepared to cash in on the attacking midfielder during the summer as they avoid losing him on a free transfer. The 24-year-old has plenty of interest, with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all vying for his signature.

Liverpool remains front-runners for the midfielder. Mount reportedly remains open to joining Jurgen Klopp’s squad. The Reds manager wants to revamp his midfield and views the 24-year-old as a key addition towards improving their quality.

Chelsea would reportedly command a £60-70 million fee if they decide to sell. The rumours of an imminent exit surfaced after Mount approached Neil Fewings to become his new agent. While the possible appointment was initially thought for finding a new club, it may well be to negotiate terms with the Chelsea hierarchy.

As reported in the English media, the big issue has been Chelsea’s reluctance to match Mount’s asking salary. The 24-year-old wants parity with Reece James, who recently signed a new deal. Meanwhile, the midfielder does not want to sign super long-term deals, something the club have offered to several recruits.

Fabrizio Romano insists Chelsea are keen on extending Mount’s contract. He also clarified the possible appointment of Fewings, suggesting it could be for negotiations. Alternatively, if they fail to find an agreement, the new agent could help find a new club for the 24-year-old.

Romano said, “Chelsea want to extend Mason Mount’s contract, but at the moment there is still no agreement. Mount’s father Tony will remain the player’s agent, but my understanding is that he has also approached another agent Neil Fewings to work together with him.”

“He will take care of the negotiations, he will talk with Chelsea about a new contract, but they cannot reach an agreement by the summer he will be on the market so Chelsea can avoid losing him on a free in 2024. Keep an eye on Liverpool because they appreciate Mount, but nothing’s decided yet.”

Mount remains a critical player for Chelsea, and losing him would be a blow to their plans to build a super team. The midfielder has carried the side in the last two years and might remain open to staying put if given the option.
