Manchester United are leading the race to sign Barcelona star midfielder Frenkie De Jong ahead of next season.

According to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United are the front runners for the signatures of Frenkie De Jong. The Red Devils are looking to further strengthen their midfield ahead of the next season and are looking to land the Barcelona star at Old Trafford.

United have been linked with the Dutch international for a while now. They tried to sign him in the summer of 2022 but things did not work out for the club as De Jong wanted to stay in Spain. Erik ten Hag has always been a big admirer of the 25-year-old and wants to add him to his ranks.

The Dutch manager has worked with De Jong during his time at Ajax. The duo spent two years together at the Dutch club where they won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup. De Jong was a key member of Ten Hag’s team that had an incredible run in the UEFA Champions League.

Meanwhile, De Jong joined the Catalan giants back in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £65 million. He has gone from strength to strength since joining them. The Dutch international has made a total of 172 appearances and has 34 goal contributions to his name.

He has been a key part of Xavi’s team in the ongoing season having made 32 appearances in all competitions. De Jong has only missed two La Liga games so far. While he wants to stay in Barcelona and has a contract that runs until 2026, he still could be sold in the summer.

The Catalan giants are in a financial crisis and they are in desperate need of funds. And as per the reports, they could sell the 25-year-old for a fee close to £70 million. United are willing to pay the amount if they manage to secure the funds by selling some of their senior players.

Erik ten Hag is keen on having the former Ajax midfielder in his ranks. He is well aware of the qualities that the Dutch international possesses. And believes that his addition could take his team to the next level.

Ten Hag has done a great job since arriving at United in the summer. He has already won a trophy at the club and is still in contention for three more. The Dutch manager will be keen on signing a few more players in the summer to help his team compete for the Premier League and the UEFA Champions.

United have their eyes set on the 25-year-old but will face competition from Chelsea, who are also interested in his services. As a result, it will be interesting to see if he manages to land De Jong at the club.
