Chelsea have entered the race for the signature of 25-year-old Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong amid interest from Manchester United.
According to a report by Fichajes, Chelsea are interested in signing Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong ahead of next season. The 25-year-old has been linked with Manchester United for a while now. But as per recent report, the Blues are all set to push for the Barcelona midfielder.
Chelsea have spent a fortune on signings ever since the arrival of new co-owner Todd Boehly. The London-based club have signed quite a few young players from across the globe. And, Chelsea are all set to break the bank again ahead of next season.
Graham Potter’s side have quite a few midfielders in their ranks but might look to offload a few of their senior players in the summer. And, Chelsea are willing to further strengthen their midfield by signing De Jong.
The Dutch midfielder joined Barcelona back in the summer of 2019 from Ajax. He has gone from strength to strength since joining the Spanish giants. He has made over 150 appearances for the Catalan giants and has 34 goal contributions to his name.
He has been phenomenal in the ongoing season for Barcelona. The 25-year-old has featured in 32 matches and has delivered on a consistent basis for Xavi’s team. De Jong’s contract at the club ends in the summer of 2026. And, he is not interested in leaving them despite the interest from Chelsea.
However, the Blues are looking to make an €80 million offer for the Dutch midfielder. They are aware of the financial crisis that Barcelona are under. And, Xavi’s team might consider selling the 25-year-old in order to improve their situation.
The Catalan giants have a very critical financial situation. The only way they can spend any money on adding new players ahead of next season will be by offloading a few players. De Jong’s wages are also a concern for Xavi’s team. And, his departure could help in stabilising the club financially.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are willing to push for the 25-year-old. They are all set to spend big to bring the midfield sensation to the club. However, it won’t be easy as they will face competition from rivals Manchester United.
While Barcelona might look to sell him to raise funds, the last decision will still be in the hands of the player. De Jong has a contract with the club and he can decide whether he wants to continue in Spain or not despite all the interest from elsewhere.
