Jorge Mendes has reportedly offered Barcelona the chance to sign Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio for free this summer.

According to Anton Meana on Cadena SER, Barcelona will have the opportunity to sign Marco Asensio. The Spanish forward has rejected the latest contract offer from Real Madrid. And he might depart from the Santiago Bernabeu as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

Marco Asensio has endured a frustrating stint since recovering from a long-term knee injury. What should have been a career of a world-beater has crumbled into one where he is a bit-part player for Real Madrid. The 27-year-old has still shown flashes of brilliance but has been unable to become a first-choice starter.

The Spanish international has started less than 30 per cent of Real Madrid’s games this season. But he has still managed six goals and five assists thus far this term. Meanwhile, Asensio’s long-term Real Madrid future is uncertain as he is in the final months of his contract. Such a situation might benefit Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

The Spaniard has popped up on the radars of several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool. But one cannot rule out a shock summer move to Barcelona, with the Blaugrana monitoring his situation. And Jorge Mendes has now offered the Real Madrid contract rebel to the Catalan outfit.

The report by Anton Meana has claimed that the 27-year-old has rejected the latest contract offer by Real Madrid. And Asensio’s situation might be Real Madrid’s loss while being Barcelona’s gain. The Catalan giants are in financial peril, with Javier Tebas recently claiming he will not allow them to make summer signings.

Barcelona will need to balance the books before making and registering new signings. But signing a top-notch forward like Asensio for free will benefit the Blaugrana greatly. They have recently discussed signing the Real Madrid forward in a Bosman move. And Jorge Mendes’s move will give Barcelona the impetus to begin negotiations.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid will continue to discuss a new deal with Asensio’s entourage. But reports have claimed that the Spanish international will only sign a contract on his terms. So it will be interesting to see if the two parties reach a middle ground or if Barcelona can sign him.
