Chelsea are all set to battle it out with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United for the signature of Emiliano Martinez.
According to a report by Fichajes, Chelsea have entered the race for the signature of Emiliano Martinez. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have already been linked with the Aston Villa shot-stopper. But, with the Blues entering the race, things are going to get a lot more complicated.
Emiliano Martinez has been among the best goalkeepers in the world for the past few seasons. His heroics at the FIFA World Cup 2022 have not gone unnoticed. The 30-year-old goalkeeper was sensational at the mega-event and helped Argentina lift the ultimate silverware.
Martinez finished the World Cup with the golden glove. And since then, a lot of clubs have had their eyes on the Argentine. He joined Aston Villa from Arsenal back in the summer of 2020. Since his arrival at Villa Park, he has been the undisputed number one. And, his performances have helped Argentina win the Copa America as well as the World Cup.
In the ongoing season, Martinez has kept seven clean sheets in 24 outings. While his team has not been at their best, he has still managed to perform on a consistent basis.
Meanwhile, Premier League clubs are interested in his services. Chelsea are one of the clubs who are pushing for the 30-year-old shot-stopper’s signatures. The Blues do have Kepa Arrizabalaga and Wdouard Mendy in their ranks. But, neither of them has been that consistent.
Graham Potter is expected to look for a new goalkeeper as Chelsea try to revive themselves next season. Martinez is one of their targets. And given their financial prowess, they are all set to go all out for the Argentina international.
Meanwhile, they will also have to battle it out with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs are looking for a possible Hugo Lloris replacement. The 36-year-old French goalkeeper is on the decline and pushing for a replacement in the summer makes perfect sense.
On the other hand, Manchester United have also been linked with the World Cup winner. David de Gea’s performance in the first half of the season was a concern for Erik ten Hag. But, the Spaniard has managed to revive himself.
De Gea is back at his best and a new contract at Old Trafford awaits him. As a result, they are unlikely to be that big a problem for the Blues. However, it will be interesting to see where Emiliano Martinez ends up ahead of next season.
