Tottenham have joined the race for 26-year-old Bundesliga defender Nico Elvedi, who also has interest from Roma.

According to Sport Italia, Nico Elvedi has plenty of interest, as Tottenham become the latest side to join the chase. Roma are also keen on the 26-year-old Bundesliga defender, with sides eyeing a cut-price deal for the Swiss star in the summer.

Nico Elvedi has been a consistent presence at the back for Borussia Monchengladbach, but the German side could lose the player on the cheap in the summer. The 26-year-old Bundesliga defender will enter the final year of his deal at the club, thus opening the doors for suitors to swoop in.

Jose Mourinho wants to sign the centre-back at Roma next summer. The Portuguese tactician feels the 26-year-old Bundesliga defender will be a good addition, with the future of Chris Smalling in considerable doubt. With money in short supply, the Italian side may eye a few cut-price moves, with the Swiss star fitting properly in their plans.

The only hindrance for Mourinho is the presence of his former side Tottenham in the chase. Antonio Conte has identified the need to prioritise defensive reinforcements to strengthen the side. Spurs have several options at the back but will want to improve the overall quality.

From Conte’s perspective, he may not have considered someone like Elvedi as his topmost priority. Instead, he wanted the club to pursue the likes of Milan Skriniar or Alessandro Bastoni, but none of those options are available for a move to north London.

Tottenham have since moved on to other targets, with fellow Bundesliga defender Evan Ndicka also featuring on their shortlist. Spurs have had problems with their backline this season due to the inconsistent performances of some of their experienced stars like Eric Dier or Clement Lenglet.

While the latter’s future remains unclear beyond his current loan deal, Tottenham could renew Eric Dier’s contract at the club. The north Londoners value the England international’s experience and longevity on their side, meaning he could stay here for longer than anticipated earlier.

The idea of signing 26-year-old Bundesliga defender Elvedi would resonate well with Conte or the Spurs hierarchy for the quality he would bring. Currently, Spurs do not have much quality beyond their starting back three, with Davinson Sanchez or Japhet Tanganga not considered ideal for their plans.

They are also linked with Fikayo Tomori, the former Chelsea defender now at AC Milan. However, from a price point, the English star would cost a lot more than the 26-year-old Bundesliga defender. Hence, Elvedi makes plenty of sense, particularly since he would enter his final year at Monchengladbach.

The idea of joining a top-rated Premier League team would resonate well with any player, and Elvedi could consider the move in the summer. Meanwhile, Roma will hope Tottenham’s interest isn’t serious, and they will want to sign the Swiss man in the summer.
