Manchester City are interested in signing 28-year-old Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic ahead of next season.

According to Daily Telegraph, Manchester City have their eyes set on Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic. Pep Guardiola is looking to add a few new faces to his midfield ahead of next season. And, the 28-year-old is likely to be one of them.

The Premier League champions were interested in signing Kovacic back in 2018. But, they failed to get the deal over the line. And, Chelsea managed to sign the Croat on loan from Real Madrid. The Blues then decided to make the deal a permanent one.

After five long years, Manchester City are once again pushing for the signature of Kovacic. And, this time they are desperate to land the Croatian midfielder at the club ahead of next season.

During his time at Chelsea, he has featured in over 200 matches. In the ongoing season, the 28-year-old has made a total of 23 appearances. It has been a decent season for the Croatia international. But, his future at the club looks uncertain.

His contract at the club ends in the summer of 2024. However, he might leave the Blues in a few months’ time. Ever since Todd Boehly co-bought the club, the idea has been to buy young players and prepare a team for the future.

The Blues already have a huge squad and will be looking to sell a few of their senior players in the upcoming window. They have already let go of Jorginho and Kovacic is likely to be next on the way out.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are looking to sign a few midfielders in the summer. They have their eyes set on Jude Bellingham. But, with a lot of interest from elsewhere, it is going to be difficult. One of the alternatives that they have is Kovacic. Even if they do manage to sign Bellingham, they might still sign the 28-year-old as he will add a lot to their midfield.

Manchester City could even push for both Bellingham and Kovacic because of the uncertainty around Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva’s future. Gundogan’s contract ends in the summer while Silva has been wanting a move away from the club for a while now. If both the players leave they might go all out for Bellingham as well as Kovacic.
