Manchester City discussing contract renewal with Nathan Ake

Premier League giants Manchester City are reportedly keen on renewing the contract of 28-year-old defender Nathan Ake.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City are in talks with Nathan Ake over a possible contract renewal in the coming weeks. The Dutch international has become an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s team of late. And, people at the club want to renew his existing contract amidst interest from elsewhere.

Ake joined Manchester City in the summer of 2020. He started off as a backup at the club but has managed to become a regular in the ongoing season. The former Chelsea defender has started 15 out of the 25 league games for Guardiola.

His current contract ends in the summer of 2025, and Ake currently earns £90,000 per week. And Manchester City are ready to increase his wages in order to seal a new deal with the Dutch international.

The shocking departure of Joao Cancelo in the January window has helped Ake slot in as left-back. The 28-year-old has managed to make it his own. He is all set to feature in a lot more games, with Manchester City fighting for the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League titles.

The 28-year-old defender has played 68 matches for Manchester City while having six goals to his name. He has played 28 of those matches in the ongoing season, scoring twice. Both his goals have come while playing as a left-back.

The Dutch international has been performing at a high level for the past few months. And, Guardiola has even praised him. The Spanish manager said he is delighted to have him at the club. And, the Manchester City boss has hailed transfer chief Txiki Begiristain for signing the 28-year-old.

Meanwhile, there was a lot of interest in Ake’s services last summer as well as in the recently-concluded winter transfer window. Chelsea are one of the clubs who have shown interest in re-signing him.

The Blues were very close to bringing him back to the club in the summer. But, they could not manage to strike a deal with Manchester City. However, they are still keeping a close eye on his situation at the club. As a result, Manchester City are trying to pen down a new deal with the 28-year-old. They are eager to keep him at the club for a long period of time.
