Liverpool front-runners to sign Mason Mount

Liverpool have taken the lead in the chase of 24-year-old Chelsea star Mason Mount, whose contractual situation has alerted Jurgen Klopp.

According to Daily Mirror, Liverpool are in pole position to make a move for Mason Mount in the summer. With contract talks collapsing amid renewed salary demands, the 24-year-old Chelsea star’s future at Stamford Bridge has come in significant doubt.

There is an interesting situation brewing at Chelsea, with the club likely making key decisions on the futures of important players. After two windows of enormous spending, the Blues must align with FFP regulations to avoid complications.

Adding several young stars in January has brought the FFP spotlight on Chelsea. Graham Potter has struggled to manage such a big squad, meaning they could conduct a few sales to balance their act. Some of the homegrown stars could find themselves transfer listed.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah have all come from the academy and have decent market values. Selling them would enormously improve Chelsea’s books. The big transfer could be that of Mason Mount, with the 24-year-old’s future threatening on uncertain waters.

Mount is reportedly seeking a high wage package amid a fresh demand. Moreover, he does not want to sign the kind long deals that Chelsea have been dishing out to new recruits. Hence, there is an impasse between the two parties, with the club likely to push contract talks until the summer.

That is when Mount will enter the final year of his deal, thus alerting interested clubs of his potential availability. Manchester United are tracking his situation, while other bigwigs are keen to bring the 24-year-old Chelsea star in the summer.

Liverpool are also firmly in the race as Jurgen Klopp wants a player of Mount’s profile. The Reds could overhaul parts of their squad, particularly in the middle of the pitch, to ensure a new era at Anfield. They have considerably struggled for relevance this season.

Like Chelsea, they face a significant fight to finish in the top four. The idea of signing Mount has been ringing around in the media for some time now. And if the situation with the Englishman does not change, a transfer could look imminent.

Signing the 24-year-old Chelsea star could be seen as a huge coup for Liverpool. But other top sides like Manchester United and Manchester City could also make their interest known. Much will depend on Mount, who may want to continue playing in the Champions League.
