Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea at the end of the season.

According to a report from Fichajes, Tottenham have shown interest in signing 29-year-old Belgian attacker Romelu Lukaku, who wants to quit Chelsea permanently in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to reunite Lukaku with Antonio Conte. And it remains to be seen whether they can secure an agreement with their London rivals in the coming months. Conte worked with Lukaku during their time together at Inter Milan. And the Italian manager managed to get the best out of the Belgian international back then.

Lukaku’s performances under Conte prompted Chelsea to spend £97.5 million on him. But the transfer has not worked out one bit. The striker struggled to adapt to Thomas Tuchel’s system at Stamford Bridge, and the Blues decided to loan him out at the start of this season.

Lukaku does not intend to play for Chelsea in the future. And it remains to be seen whether Chelsea are ready to cut their losses on him and let him leave at the end of the season. But selling him to Tottenham might raise some eyebrows.

Tottenham need to add more depth to their attacking unit, and Lukaku could prove to be a quality signing. Harry Kane is currently the only reliable goalscorer this season, with the likes of Son Heung-min and Richarlison being largely underwhelming.

Conte will need another attacker who can share the goalscoring burden alongside the England international. In addition, Kane faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid interest from Manchester United.

Lukaku and Kane could form a lethal attacking partnership and help Tottenham challenge for major trophies. The Belgian is already used to playing under Conte and could settle in at Tottenham and make an immediate impact.

Lukaku has proven himself in English football, and the transfer could be a risk worth taking. At 29, he is at the peak of his career and could transform Tottenham in the final third. However, the Chelsea striker is unlikely to come cheap, and Tottenham will probably have to pay a premium price for him.

Chelsea paid £97.5 million to sign him from Inter Milan. And although the Blues will not be able to recoup that money for him, they will still demand a considerable sum of money especially if they are selling to a direct rival. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few months now.

Lukaku has been quite underwhelming during his loan spell at Inter Milan so far. And his performances will certainly have a bearing on his asking price. It will be interesting to see if a cross-London switch is on the cards.
