Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Lecce captain Morten Hjulmand at the end of the season.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund have sent scouts to watch 23-year-old Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand in action a number of times. It remains to be seen whether Lecce are prepared to let their club captain leave at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old is highly rated in Serie A, and he has a big future ahead of him. The player has five assists to his name across all competitions. Hjulmand has a contract with the Italian club until the summer of 2024. And Lecce could be under pressure to sell him if he refuses to sign an extension with them.

The Danish midfielder has the potential to develop into a top-class player, and he could prove to be a quality long-term addition to the Tottenham squad. However, it would be quite surprising if Tottenham decided to invest in another defensive midfielder.

The north Londoners already have Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Yves Bissouma at their disposal. Antonio Conte needs to bring in a creative central midfielder instead. Tottenham have been linked with players like James Maddison in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Hjulmand will be hoping to play regularly at his new club. And Tottenham might not be able to provide you with that platform. The likes of Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur are currently the undisputed starters at the Premier League club. And summer signing Yves Bissouma has found it difficult to break into the starting lineup.

Hjulmand is likely to be the fourth-choice midfielder at the club. And joining Tottenham might not be ideal for the development of the 23-year-old. The north London club are unlikely to be able to provide him with game time assurances next season.

The 23-year-old needs to play regularly at this stage of his career. And moving to Borussia Dortmund could be ideal for Lecce captain. Mahmoud Dahoud has been linked with a move away from the German club. And Hjulmand could get plenty of opportunities at the Signal Iduna Park next season. It will be interesting to see if the player leaves the Serie A club anytime soon.
