Manchester United and Newcastle United chase 22-year-old Bundesliga defender Jeremie Frimpong in the summer window.
According to Ben Jacobs via Caught Offside, Jeremie Frimpong is a target for Manchester United and Newcastle United. The Premier League duo want to sign a new right-back, as a battle could ensue for the 22-year-old Bundesliga defender in the summer window.
Jeremie Frimpong was expected to attract attention in the January window but went about the month rather quietly. He is a highly-rated star from Bayer Leverkusen, with his performances leading to a call-up to the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.
While no move materialised in January, the summer window might bring in notable offers on the table. A transfer to the Premier League could be on the cards as several clubs, including Manchester United, remains interested in the 22-year-old Bundesliga defender.
Erik ten Hag wants to sign several players in different positions to strengthen the squad. Bringing a right back may become necessary as Aaron Wan-Bissake could depart the club. Manchester United are ready to cash in on the fullback, as he does not fit their new system.
Diogo Dalot remains their undisputed first-choice right back, and he is likely to sign a new contract with the club. Ten Hag does not want to implement a hierarchical system in any position. Instead, he wants players that would compete for a place.
Hence, the idea of Frimpong appeals to the Dutch manager as Manchester United could make a move in the summer. They compete with Newcastle United, also in the market for a new right back. Eddie Howe has complete faith in Kieran Trippier, but the England international will be 33 soon; hence, the Magpies need a younger star.
Journalist Ben Jacobs commented on the fullback’s situation and said, “More generally, there are a few other fullbacks to keep an eye on. “Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong is being tracked by Newcastle and Manchester United.
Howe wants someone like Frimpong to come in and compete with Trippier for a place. The 22-year-old Bundesliga defender could become a long-term replacement for the England star in the future, and in the now, he can learn from the experienced star.
These clubs could battle it out for the Dutchman in the summer, as Bayer Leverkusen will ask for a significant price from Premier League sides. Frimpong will have two years left on his deal in the summer, the best time to make the sale.
