Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal reportedly lead the race for the signature of Youri Tielemans.
According to a report by GiveMeSport, Manchester United and Arsenal are set to battle it out for Youri Tielemans. The 25-year-old midfielder’s contract at Leicester City is set to expire in the summer of 2023.
A lot of clubs are interested in landing the Belgian international. As of now, Manchester United and Arsenal are the top contenders for his services. Meanwhile, Leicester City have been trying to extend his contract for a while now. They have been pushing for a new deal for almost two years but have not tasted any success. And, it is almost certain that he will be leaving the club in the summer as a free agent.
Despite it being a mediocre season for the Foxes in the Premier League, the 25-year-old has been a standout performer. Leicester are currently 14th in the league with 21 points out of a possible 63. The Foxes are just three points clear of the relegation zone and cannot afford any slip-ups.
A few poor outings can make it an even more difficult season for them. They have been way below their usual self. It has been a disappointing season as they are all set to miss out on European football for next season. It is all set to hamper them in their transfer business.
Tielemans has put in solid performances at the centre of the park day in and day out. He has made 27 appearances for the Foxes and has been directly involved in five goals. The Belgian international has made 185 appearances for the Foxes. He has been a key part of their team over the past few seasons. But, it seems like his time at the club is about to end as he looks for Champions League football next season.
Meanwhile, Manchester United, under Erik ten Hag, have been doing well in the Premier League. They are currently third in the table and likely to secure Champions League football for next season. The Red Devils do not really have much depth in the middle of the park, and that is something the manager would love to change.
They have already signed a few quality players over the past two transfer window. But they do need a central midfielder: someone who can slot in alongside Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro to make a world-class trio. Signing Tielemans will give ten Hag depth as well as add another world-class talent to his ranks.
As far as Arsenal are concerned, Mikel Arteta has revived the sleeping giants. They are currently leading the race for the Premier League title. Arsenal will be expected to challenge for every trophy out there in the next season. And, for that to happen they need a few more quality players. The 25-year-old will surely bolster their squad and allow Arteta to be flexible in the midfield.
His contract expires in six months and is free to agree on a pre-contract with clubs from outside England. It will be interesting to see which club ends up signing Tielemans. While Manchester United and Arsenal are leading the race, things can change quickly when it comes to a free agent.
