Newcastle United could be interested in Stefan de Vrij for this month or in the summer, with the defender set to decide his future with Inter Milan.

According to Sport Italia, Stefan de Vrij is a target for Newcastle United this month or in the summer. The 30-year-old Serie A ace is set to decide his future with Inter Milan by mid-February, as his contract expires in the summer.

Newcastle United will remain alert over any potential late deals in this market, as Eddie Howe is open to strengthening his squad. They have kept tabs on players in several positions to add quality depth, but nothing substantial has materialised so far.

They have agreed on a deal with Everton for Anthony Gordon as Howe is keen to add an attacker to his ranks. If a central defender becomes available, the manager might shift his attention towards shoring up the backline before the window shuts.

Stefan de Vrij has come on their radar as Howe could look at bringing the 30-year-old Serie A ace to St James Park. Newcastle United certainly lack quality depth in central defence and could do with the presence of an experienced star such as the Dutchman.

De Vrij is at a crossroads in choosing his next career move as his Inter Milan contract expires in the summer, and he has yet to decide whether to stay at the San Siro. The Nerrazuri are reportedly open to offering him a new deal, but the 30-year-old Serie A ace has asked for more time to decide.

According to the report, De Vrij is pushing the decision until mid-Frbruary. It will prove good for the club if he chooses to stay put at Inter. In the scenario that he moves on, the Serie A giants lose the opportunity to sell him before the current window shuts.

There’s already considerable interest coming from Premier League sides as well as Spain. Hence, the Dutchman has no shortage of options if he leaves on a free transfer. Inter will hope he decides his fate imminently so they can look to sell him on a cut-price deal before the current window shuts.

Newcastle United could remain open to adding a new centre-back, and De Vrij’s experience might help them finish in the top four. Alternatively, they might wait until the summer and bring him on a free transfer, which could prove to be a shrewd decision for the club.
