Chelsea have reportedly been linked with a move for 19-year-old French defender Malo Gusto, who Lyon will unlikely sell this month.

A report from L’Equipe has claimed that Chelsea are unlikely to be able to sign 19-year-old French defender Malo Gusto this month. The Blues wanted the youngster to bolster the right-back options. But Lyon do not want to sell the teenage prodigy.

Chelsea have been keen on improving their defensive options this month. And they have already completed the signing of Benoit Badiashile from AS Monaco. The 19-year-old Lyon defender is highly-rated around Europe, and he has a big future ahead of him. He is expected to develop into a world-class player with experience and the right coaching.

Gusto operates as a right-back and is a quintessential modern-day full-back. His attack-minded approach could have been an added bonus for Chelsea, and it remains to be seen whether the Blues decide to return for him in the near future.

The 19-year-old needs to play regularly at this stage of his career in order to continue his development, and moving to Chelsea might not have been ideal for him either. Graham Potter already has Reece James at his disposal. And Gusto would have struggled for regular game time at the west London club following James’s recovery.

The French defender should look to continue with development with regular football at Lyon. And he will have plenty of opportunities to join a top club in the near future if he manages to fulfill his potential. That is because several high-profile outfits have already shown interest in the teenager.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have been very active in the transfer market this month, and they have already brought in a number of signings to improve their squad. It remains to be seen whether they can bring in a quality central midfielder before the January transfer window closes.

The west London club have already tasted defeat in their pursuit of Enzo Fernandez this month and are hoping to secure the services of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo. As far as Malo Gusto is concerned, he should focus on improving in the coming seasons. There is no reason why he cannot play for a top club soon.
