Anthony Elanga is reportedly interested in joining Borussia Dortmund over Premier League relegation-battlers Everton on loan in January.

Manchester United’s prodigious winger Anthony Elanga, who has been linked with a Premier League loan move to relegation-threatened Everton in recent weeks, prefers a transfer to Borussia Dortmund and is waiting for the Red Devils to give the green light to his winter departure, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Elanga joined Manchester United in 2015 and rose through the club’s youth ranks before breaking into the first-team picture last season. The Sweden international proved to be a bright spot in what was a dull season for the club and showed plenty of promise during the second half of last season.

He was a regular starter under Ralf Rangnick and chipped in with a fair few goals. However, he has struggled to replicate the sparkling performances this term and is currently behind Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho in the pecking order for a starting role. As a consequence, he has seen just 602 minutes of football action and has been left frustrated with the lack of playing time.

What’s more, there could be increased competition in his position soon, with Facundo Pellistri putting on impressive cameo displays. In addition, Jadon Sancho is also nearing a comeback after being put under individual training by boss Erik ten Hag. So, Elanga seems the most likely option to head for the exit door. And Borussia Dortmund appear to have been exploring a loan deal for the speedy Swedish winger.

The opportunity to move to a European giant and work with a progressive manager like Edin Terzic is likely to be an attractive proposition for the young winger, who is still very raw and needs to sharpen up some areas of his game. Recent reports have revealed that Everton are keen on signing the player on an initial short-term loan deal as well. But the 20-year-old has been fancied to prefer a move abroad.

The Toffees are currently fighting the relegation battle. And it seems highly unlikely that a player like Elanga would want to join them at this crucial developmental stage of his career. On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund could provide him with UEFA Champions League football this season. And a move to the German club seems more appealing.

No wonder the player’s priority would be to join the Black and Yellows. But the final decision on his future rests with Manchester United. It remains to be seen how the situation develops in the penultimate week of the transfer window and whether the Red Devils will sanction a straight loan deal or be ready to include some form of an option to buy.
