Newcastle have been linked with a move to sign Bundesliga striker Marcus Thuram, but the World Cup finalist does not want to move to Tyneside amid interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.
Newcastle United have been touted as a potential destination for soon-to-be free agent Borussia Monchengladbach and France forward Marcus Thuram. However, Football Transfers journalist Jacque Talbot has now revealed that the 25-year-old Frenchman is not keen on a move to Newcastle United.
The 25-year-old, who can operate as a forward or left winger, has been in fine form in Germany this term. He has found the back of the net 13 times in 17 appearances for Borussia Monchengladbach this season and even impressed for France at the World Cup, registering two assists, including one in the final against Argentina.
The original plan for the 25-year-old was to stay at Gladbach for the rest of the season as he looked to help Gladbach qualify for the Europa League next season and compete for the Bundesliga’s top scorer award. Thereafter, he will move to his desired club on a Bosman transfer in the summer when his contract with the German outfit expires, after assessing all the options on the table.
However, there has been a lot of talk surrounding Thuram’s future after the tournament and an increased interest in his services, with Newcastle linked with a move for the talented forward. Reports have suggested that the Magpies are plotting a £10 million bid for the player, with Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin even admitting that he tried to lure his compatriot to the North-East.
The Magpies are apparently on the lookout to bolster their attacking depth even further because of the persistent injury problems to key attackers Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, and Saint-Maximin. Thuram may have been a useful bargain addition for the Toon, but they are now out of the running in the race for his signature, with the player unwilling to join them on their exciting journey ahead.
Thuram is one of, if not, the most in-form striker available in the transfer market this month, and is likely to have no shortage of top-level suitors already plying their trade in European competitions.
Manchester United, for one, are looking for a low-cost striker option this month, and Thuram seems like an ideal fit. The Red Devils were previously touted as front-runners to land the World Cup finalist, but it looks like they have switched their attention towards acquiring a striker on a temporary deal in Wout Weghorst, having opened talks with Burnley and Besiktas to enquire over a potential loan swoop for the Dutch international.
Chelsea, meanwhile, views Thuram as a great market opportunity and are keen to try and wrap up a deal as quickly as possible in a bid to bolster the squad and overturn a really disappointing start to 2023.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Todd Boehly & co. are now having discussions with Gladbach and trying to learn the asking price as well as what kind of conditions must be met for them to sign him this month. Thuram can be a smart signing if the Blues are able to get the deal over the line.
