Manchester United will reportedly look to sign Memphis Depay on loan from Barcelona in the January transfer window.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Memphis Depay is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils want to re-sign the Dutch attacker on loan from Barcelona in the January transfer window.
Memphis Depay has seen his career come to a grinding halt in the last six months. The 28-year-old went into the 2022/23 season as the joint-top scorer for Barcelona in his debut campaign. But his stock has plummeted in the past year following the raft of signings that Barcelona made in the last two transfer windows.
The Dutchman has managed just 131 minutes of game time thus far this term across three outings. And with Depay in the final year of his Barcelona contract, a departure this year seems inevitable. The player has no shortage of suitors either, with Manchester United among the clubs keen on signing him.
Depay spent 18 months at Manchester United between July 2015 and January 2017. But his stint with the Red Devils was disastrous as he never got going at Old Trafford before departing half a decade ago. The Dutch attacker has come a long way since then and is now a more confident player.
In addition, with Manchester United desperate for an offensive reinforcement, he has emerged as a viable target. In addition, the Barcelona attacker will also be a cost-effective option, which adds to his appeal. That is because Manchester United’s financial condition has worsened. And they cannot splurge in the January transfer window.
So Manchester United will approach Barcelona with a loan offer this month. But such a proposal makes no sense, considering Depay’s Barcelona contract will run out in the summer. So the only way the 28-year-old will departs from Camp Nou is if a suitor meets Barcelona’s asking price.
Recent reports have claimed that Manchester United and Depay have been in contact. But it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils submit an offer to re-sign the player permanently. For now, the Dutchman faces an uncertain future at FC Barcelona amid his dwindling fortunes.
