Newcastle United have reportedly ruled out a move for Chelsea midfield maestro Jorginho.

According to a report by Football Insider, high-flying Newcastle United will not make a move for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho in the upcoming 2023 January transfer window.

The Italian international is one of Graham Potter’s senior first-team stars and played key roles in Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League win in 2021 and Italy’s UEFA Euro 2020 triumph later that summer.

The 31-year-old is in the final six months of his contract and could leave Chelsea for free in the upcoming summer. Jorginho is yet to pen fresh terms at Chelsea and could instead opt to sign a pre-agreement with foreign clubs on a Bosman starting January 1, 2023.

Despite their lack of depth in the middle of the park, Chelsea’s best hope of recouping a transfer fee rests in selling Jorginho in January. That appears to be the line of thought at Stamford Bridge, given that the Italian international was linked with Newcastle. The Magpies, however, have passed on the opportunity.

Eddie Howe’s side are flying high this season. And adding the right players to their roster this winter should see them keep up that swagger. Newcastle had Jorginho on their radar but have now deemed him too old for their project.

At 31, the Chelsea midfield maestro is not getting any younger and is also amongst the slowest players at the club. He will struggle to cope with the style employed at St. James’ Park and could become a case of a square peg being forced down a round hole.

Newcastle United are eyeing a midfielder and have been linked with the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. Both South Americans are 21 years old and can develop into a long-term solution for the Magpies in the middle of the park. The same cannot be said of Jorginho, who has maybe two or three years at the top.

Chelsea look to be stuck with Jorginho for now and will hope that some other club makes their move in the coming days. Todd Boehly is rebuilding the squad and will need to revamp the midfield in the coming windows. While Jorginho’s experience and ability make him an important cog, the Blues are better off building for the future and doing away with the past.
