Premier League duo Fulham and Everton are set to go up against each other in the race for Coventry City star Victor Gyokeres

According to Swedish outlet Afton Bladet, Premier League sides Everton and Fulham will go up against each other in the race to sign Coventry City striker Victor Gyokeres.

The 24-year-old is enjoying a fine run of form this season, netting 12 times in 23 Championship games for the Sky Blues. He is the joint top scorer in the English second tier this season alongside Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom. Gyokeres is singlehandedly keeping an inconsistent Coventry City side in the hunt for an unlikely playoff spot.

The Swedish international’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with several top-flight teams keeping a close watch on his situation. Everton and Fulham are both in touch with the player regarding a potential move.

The Toffees, in particular, have followed Gyokeres for a while now and are in desperate need of reinforcements mid-season. Frank Lampard’s side have been abysmal and look set for another drawn-out battle to stave off relegation this season.

Everton have found the back of the net just 12 times this season, a tally that is only better than Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest, both of who are in the bottom three. The Boxing Day loss to Wolves can be deemed a hammer blow and further enhances the need for an infallible goalscorer at Goodison Park.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin continues to struggle with injuries, while Neal Maupay has failed to replace Richarlison adequately. The lack of an infallible goalscorer is evident, and the issue is something the Toffees will do well to address as soon as possible.

Fulham, on the other hand, sit in the ninth spot in the league and have impressed upon their return to the top flight. The attack, is, however, too reliant on Aleksandar Mitrovic and could do with another goalscorer in their ranks.

Gyokeres is a good dribbler with an excellent eye for a pass. While his aerial prowess is nothing to write home about, the ability on the counter and movement should complement Mitrovic’s own strengths. A front two that can complement each other and find the net consistently could help Marco Silva’s side maintain their impressive start to the season.

The 24-year-old Swede’s contract at Coventry runs until 2024, and one could argue that his stock has never been higher. However, the Sky Blues are currently in the process of being sold and that could make any deal in the works, a complicated process.

Whether Everton’s desperation or Fulham’s interest will amount to anything should gradually reveal itself in the coming weeks. Coventry, for their part, could struggle to keep pace with the sides in the top half of the Championship without their ace striker.
