Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to a report from the Italian publication La Repubblica, Alexis Mac Allister is on Liverpool’s radar. But the Premier League giants will face competition from the likes of Benfica and Juventus for the 23-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder.

Alexis Mac Allister has been a key player for Brighton since joining the club. And he managed to excel during the 2022 FIFA World Cup earlier this month. The 23-year-old was an important player for Argentina as La Albiceleste lifted the World Cup trophy ten days ago.

Liverpool are in desperate need of midfield additions, and the €40 million-rated star could prove to be a quality signing for them. Mac Allister is already well-settled in the Premier League, and he could make an immediate impact at Anfield.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent months. And the likes of Jude Bellingham, Sofyan Amrabat, and Enzo Fernandez are thought to be on the radar as well. But the Reds’ pursuit of Bellingham might end soon.

According to reports, Benfica are eyeing up a move for the Brighton midfielder as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who is expected to complete a big-money move away from the Portuguese club in the upcoming windows. On the other hand, Juventus are looking to improve their midfield options with the signing of the Brighton star as well.

The Seagulls will not want to lose a key player midway through the season, and it seems unlikely that they will sanction his departure in January. It is fair to assume that Liverpool might have to wait until the summer transfer window in order to sign the player. But whenever the Argentine international leaves, Brighton will demand €40 million for him.

A move to Anfield would be the ideal step up in the midfielder’s career, and a manager like Jurgen Klopp could help him fulfill his potential. The Reds are set to lose players like Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as free agents at the end of the season. And they will need to bring in a number of players in order to replace them adequately.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool can finish in the top four and secure UEFA Champions League qualification this season. They might struggle to attract the top talents without the lure of European football. For now, Argentine international Mac Allister has emerged as a viable target for Liverpool.
