Manchester United have scouted Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos on multiple occasions as the Red Devils continue to search for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to Give me sport, Manchester United have Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos on the top of their list as they have been looking for a striker in the January transfer window.

The arrival of Antony from Ajax looked to have completed United’s strikeforce as Erik ten Hag seemed quite happy with the arrangements at the club. But one after another drama unfolded as United’s hapless showings in front of the goal almost derailed their season.

The manager will now take the help of the winter transfer market and would request another striker to improve his squad. The Red Devils hierarchy injected substantial funds into their summer transfer budget and they will have to survive with a very limited transfer kitty next month.

Benfica president Rui Costa already made it clear they won’t be forced in selling the player and unless they are getting a like-minded offer they will keep hold of the player.

“We have the sole objective of having a winning season, no player will leave – unless it is due to the clause – which at this moment is fundamental for the squad.

“What I can promise our supporters is what I did at the beginning of the year. This is a sporting project, not a financial one. Fortunately, we are not experiencing financial problems and we have no need to sell players.”

The player does have a mammoth release clause to the tune of €120 million but the belief is that a deal can be done at a much lower price. United are also monitoring Cody Gakpo but the 23-year-old is more of a wide player and United are heavily armed with wingers currently.

Eminent journalist Fabrizio Romano divulged United have watched the player before the World Cup started.

“Gonçalo Ramos is a player they know very well. Before the World Cup, they sent their scouts to monitor Gonçalo Ramos, they know he has very good skills and very good potential. But Benfica have no intention to sell him in January, so it’s not going to be easy.”

Ramos’s strong presence in the World Cup already alerted a number of clubs and his hattrick against Switzerland was one of the monumental moments in the tournament.
