Manchester United could lose David de Gea for free as the club is unwilling to trigger the goalkeeper’s one-year extension clause.

As per Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United are not considering using the one-year option in David de Gea’s contract and will sign a new number one next summer.

De Gea has been the undisputed choice in the United goal until the arrival of Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager is pretty particular with his goalkeepers and has certain fundamentals that the Spaniard has found pretty difficult to cope with.

The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper has not been the best ball-playing keeper in the Premier League but has worked on improving his distribution and passing to a major extent.

The United manager seems to be pretty happy with the keeper’s involvement but there are severe doubts over his suitability at this juncture in time. United have already managed to free a large chunk of their wage bill by offloading Cristiano Ronaldo and by letting de Gea leave they would save a whole lot of money.

The long-time United servant is ready to reduce his current wage as the club feels his current performance doesn’t really reflect his current status. United have already scouted Porto man Diogo Costa and he could be the best bet in case the 32-year-old leaves on a free transfer this summer.

United’s manager earlier insisted he is not bothered about the player’s current contractual status and is only concentrating on performance.

“As a person, I like him. I can cooperate with him really well.

“But first we go to the winter and then we will talk about how to deal with such situations.

“We only think about performing, we have a lot of games to go, so I don’t want to get that interfered by talks.”

There haven’t been any doubts about his shot-stopping skills as he has been one of the best in the business but when it comes to the other aspects of modern goalkeeping he doesn’t seem to overcome his shortcomings for the time being.

He will be the preferred choice for the remaining part of the season and there might be a change in the situation if he exceeds the manager’s expectations.
