Edson Alvarez keen on Chelsea move

Chelsea are set to renew their interest in Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez when the transfer window reopens in January.

As per give me sport, Chelsea could come back to raid Ajax to snatch the service of midfielder Edson Alvarez in January. The Blues’ effort to sign the midfielder on the deadline day went in vain but the Dutch side will be bracing up for a better offer next month.

Strengthening his midfield options will be Graham Potter’s main priority as he is poised to lose both of his first-choice midfielders for free next summer. N’Golo Kante is on the verge of joining Barcelona while Jorginho is also assessing his options and is most likely playing his last season in the blue colours.

Declan Rice has emerged as their primary target but Alvarez could be a cheaper alternative. They had a £43 million bid rejected for the midfield enforcer but with a few months passed a similar offer could prove to be sufficient as Ajax won’t likely block his departure.

Chelsea have been in touch with his entourage and personal terms won’t be an issue. Alvarez opened up on his failed transfer to the Premier League giants as he believed he still can move to a bigger club.

Eminent journalist Simon Phillips too insisted the West Londoners are expected to put in a new offer for the 25-year-old.

“I’m told there’s still tentative interest from Chelsea’s side in Alvarez. Obviously, they tried to sign him on deadline day in the summer. He was very keen to go. It looked at one point Ajax would accept our offer, but they didn’t in the end.

“They didn’t want to let him go that close to the deadline and they couldn’t replace him, so they told him he had to stay. He was disappointed by it and he’s waiting and expecting Chelsea to come back in for him again in January.”

An additional financial burden in January might shrink their summer budget but owner Todd Boehly will have to bankroll another hefty transfer kitty as his team will be in severe need of that.
