Chelsea could move in for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay in January following an injury to Armando Broja in a friendly against Aston Villa.

As per Athletic, Chelsea could be interested in picking up Memphis Depay from Barcelona in January as Armando Broja is likely to be out for a prolonged period after an untimely injury.

Just when Chelsea’s injury crisis looked to have a bit of a comforting position Broja’s injury hampered all the progress. The extent of his injury is still unknown but by the looks of it, the player will be unable to get on the pitch anytime soon.

Chelsea’s winter transfer plans could take a new shape as they will be now in for another forward on top of Christopher Nkunku who reportedly has an agreement in place with the Blues to join them.

Depay hasn’t been at his best this campaign and a lingering injury problem kept him out for most of the season. He has featured for the Netherlands in some capacity in the World Cup as the Oranje crashed out in the quarterfinal following a defeat to Argentina.

Barcelona are in the midst of a financial crisis and they need to move on players from their wage bill in a bid to overcome it. Depay is willing to leave for a club which can offer him a lucrative deal.

The Catalan giants can terminate his contract on favourable terms and the Blues can have him on a free transfer. The 28-year-old had a prior stint for Manchester United in the Premier League but that wasn’t a very pleasant experience for the Dutch international.

He could be a short-term fix for Chelsea who could also prepone their decision to bring Nkunku in the next summer. The French international also suffered an injury in France training and didn’t participate in the World Cup.

Depay is more of a wide attacker rather than a conventional number nine and if he is in the mood he can guarantee goals. Potter has struggled to guide his team properly in the attacking third and he might need some assistance.
