Aston Villa monitors Stefan de Vrij’s situation at Inter Milan, with the 30-year-old Dutch defender’s contract set to expire in the summer.

Stefan de Vrij has remained a consistent presence in defence for Inter Milan since joining from Lazio. The 30-year-old Dutch defender has played for only three clubs, including Feyenoord, but it’s the Nerrazzuri for whom he has made the most appearances.
The 30-year-old Dutch defender is coming to the end of his contract at Inter Milan, but the club are keen to extend his stay beyond the summer. Some reported complications continue to prevent contract talks from progressing, which could be due to his financial demands.
Fortunately for De Vrij, there’s considerable interest coming from elsewhere, including Real Madrid. Currently, the primary attention is from English sides, including Tottenham, Leicester City, and Aston Villa. The latter is keen on defensive reinforcements in January as Unai Emery draws up a blueprint for the club’s future.
The injury to Diego Carlos at the start of the season has rendered Villa weak in central defence. Emery could target a few names that strengthen his backline, with the January window fast approaching. The idea is to add sufficient quality and experience that stabilise things.
Names like Nacho Fernandez of Real Madrid, Leicester’s Jannik Vestergaard, and Villarreal’s Pau Torres are all mentioned, but there are question marks over Villa’s legitimacy in the chase. The experienced Spanish star could become a serious option if Madrid can source a replacement from somewhere.
Incidentally, Real Madrid remain linked with De Vrij and could take the 30-year-old Dutch defender as Nacho’s replacement. However, given the Inter star’s situation, Villa themselves will remain interested if the defender becomes available.
Inter Milan could remain open to extending his deal or a sale if they cannot agree on terms with De Vrij. The Italian giants will undoubtedly want some transfer fee in return, which is only possible with a sale in January. As for the summer, the 30-year-old Dutch defender could depart on a free transfer when his deal ends.
