Serie A giants Inter Milan reportedly want to sign Tottenham defender Emerson Royal as a replacement for Denzel Dumfries.

According to a report by Corriere dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Emerson Royal is the prime candidate to replace Denzel Dumfries. The Serie A giants currently only have a “sketchy idea” to replace the Dutchman with the Tottenham defender.

Emerson Royal arrived in Europe nearly four years ago by joining Barcelona in a convoluted deal. The Brazilian international immediately moved to Real Betis before returning to Barcelona last year. But the Blaugrana took no time to offload him, selling him to Tottenham Hotspur in August 2021.

However, the 23-year-old has struggled to make his mark at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, blowing hot and cold at an alarming rate. Emerson has featured 18 times for Spurs this season but faces an uncertain future at the north London club. Such a situation has captured the attention of Inter Milan.

The Serie A giants are in financial distress and might make a few clever alterations to the squad to get over the water. One such decision could see Inter Milan selling Denzel Dumfries, one of their most prized assets. And the Dutch defender has no shortage of suitors, with Tottenham being one of his prospective suitors.

Meanwhile, recent reports have claimed that Tottenham might sign Dumfries in January before loaning him back to Inter to beat the competition. And the Serie A giants want to tie up the 26-year-old’s replacement before selling him. That has brought Emerson Royal into the picture.

The Brazilian defender might have struggled to make his mark at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But the game’s pace in Serie A might help him rediscover his best and get back to the levels he showed at Real Betis. Tottenham will unlikely stand in his way, with Antonio Conte not rating him.

But Emerson is not a top target yet for Inter Milan, with the Nerazzurri only having a “sketchy idea” to sign him. It will be interesting to see if the Tottenham defender becomes the priority candidate to replace Dumfries next year.
