Serie A giants Lazio have reportedly set their sights on signing out-of-favour Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz in January.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Mariano Diaz is the subject of interest from Lazio. The Serie A giants want to sign the out-of-favour striker from Real Madrid in the January transfer window.

Mariano Diaz has endured a frustrating time throughout his two stints with Real Madrid. The 29-year-old’s first spell last between 2011 and 2017, and he hardly made his mark for the first team. The player then rejoined Real Madrid in August 2018 after a successful season with Lyon. But he has been a backup option for his managers since then.

The out-of-favour striker has barely featured for Real Madrid in the ongoing campaign. He has just 25 minutes of game time across five appearances, signifying his stature at the Santiago Bernabeu. But the player remains a top option in the market for several clubs, with Lazio considering a January move.

Maurizio Sarri has only one natural striker at his disposal at Stadio Olimpico and has relied on Felipe Anderson as an alternative to Ciro Immobile. So it is clear why Lazio might want to sign a striker in the January transfer window. And Mariano is an option worth considering for the Serie A club.

The 29-year-old might have struggled to make his mark for Real Madrid but was sensational for Lyon. While that successful stint in France was nearly half a decade ago, he is still at the peak of his powers. So Mariano should ideally become an asset for Lazio if he can rediscover his best form in Italy.

The nature of the game in Serie A might also suit Mariano and his qualities. But the Serie A giants are not the only club showing interest in the out-of-favour Real Madrid striker. Recent reports also linked him with struggling Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But the opportunity to join a top club like Lazio and play regular European football might tempt Mariano. So a move to Serie A might be on the cards for the 29-year-old, who could leave Real Madrid in January.
