According to Give Me Sport, Chelsea have contacted AC Milan to discuss a potential move for Rafael Leao. The 23-year-old attacker’s contract expires in 18 months, which could force the Serie A giants to consider big offers in the next window.
AC Milan are at loggerheads regarding the long-term and immediate future of talisman Rafael Leao. The 23-year-old attacker’s current deal expires in 2024, with the club keen to extend his stay at San Siro. Things have proved difficult due to the winger’s demands over signing a new deal, although his performances have warranted those claims.
Leao was the Serie A MVP last season after helping Milan win the Scudetto. He already has six goals and five assists in 14 league appearances this term. And plenty of clubs are keeping track of his situation at Milan, with some stories suggesting he was discussing a potential new deal with the club.
His demand of £170,000 per week in wages may prove difficult for Milan to address, as they continue to struggle financially. While a new contract is not ruled out, the delay in getting an agreement will enable rival clubs sniff around for the 23-year-old attacker.
Barcelona have maintained their interest, but Chelsea are considered the favourites if Leao decides to leave. With 18 months left on his deal at the turn of the year, the January transfer window would represent a tricky period for Milan to re-think their original stance to keep Leao.
While the 23-year-old attacker has a £127 million release clause attached, Chelsea could reportedly consider making a sizeable offer. Milan reportedly want around £87 million to allow Leao to leave prematurely, which could entice clubs like Chelsea.
Manchester City are also keeping tabs on his situation, with Pep Guardiola eyeing the Portuguese international. With Chelsea chasing Leao since the summer, they might have already discussed a few things with the player and Milan.
It may appear that Chelsea have remained in touch with Milan to discuss the winger’s potential transfer. They might be willing to pay a reasonable fee and sign the 23-year-old attacker in January or next summer.
Leao will be a great addition to Todd Boehly’s project at the club and make Chelsea a formidable attacking force. They will also add Christopher Nkunku, who will join next summer following an agreement with RB Leipzig. The prospect of the Frenchman and Leao in the same team seems frightening and certainly makes Chelsea a viable competitor on all fronts.
