La Liga champions Real Madrid have reportedly identified 33-year-old Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer as a possible replacement for Andriy Lunin.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Yann Sommer is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. Los Blancos will pursue the 33-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper if Andriy Lunin departs from the Santiago Bernabeu in the 2023 summer transfer window.

Yann Sommer had not left Switzerland throughout his career until he joined Borussia Monchengladbach in July 2014. And the veteran goalkeeper has established himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in the Bundesliga in the last eight and a half years. At the same time, he has been a mainstay between the sticks for Switzerland.

The 33-year-old has turned out 335 times for Gladbach, keeping 90 clean sheets. While that figure might not be impressive, the veteran goalkeeper has not been playing for a top Bundesliga club. And Sommer’s performances have captured the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Real Madrid.

Real Madrid might have to enter the market for a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. That is because widespread reports continue to speculate about Andriy Lunin’s long-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu. And if the Ukrainian international leaves Real Madrid, Los Blancos will need to bring in a replacement.

Sommer will only be a short-term solution for Real Madrid. But the 33-year-old, being one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, will be a solid acquisition for Real Madrid. But the reigning La Liga champions are not the only club showing interest in the Swiss international.

Sommer has also emerged on the radars of a few other European bigwigs, including Manchester United and Atletico Madrid. But the opportunity to join arguably the biggest club in Europe might be too hard to turn down. On the flip side, the veteran goalkeeper might get more opportunities at Manchester United if David de Gea leaves.

But the Merengues have alternatives on their shortlist, with Fernando Pacheco also emerging on their radar. So it will be interesting to see who joins Real Madrid if Andriy Lunin departs from the Santiago Bernabeu next summer.
