Manchester United have reportedly reached an ‘agreement in principle’ with Cody Gakpo over a January move from PSV Eindhoven.

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have an ‘agreement in principle’ with Cody Gakpo ahead of the January transfer window. The PSV Eindhoven winger is a top target for Erik ten Hag, who could get his man once the two clubs agree on a fee.

Cody Gakpo is having a sensational season for his club and country. The electric forward has already played 31 games for PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands, scoring 17 goals and providing 18 assists. On paper, he is the most prolific forward in Europe for combined goals and assists.

Gakpo was likely to make a big move in his career back in the summer, but multiple factors kept him at PSV. Some reports suggested Louis van Gaal wanted him to remain and keep playing regular games rather than run the risk of rotation elsewhere.

Secondly, there was the question about PSV’s willingness to let him go on the cheap. The Eredivise giants reportedly rejected a bid from Manchester United. They also snubbed advances from several other Premier League sides like Leeds United and Southampton.

PSV could allow Gakpo to leave in January if a reasonable offer arrives. The Eredivisie outfit would want the best value for their prized asset. And Manchester United are the favourites to secure his signature at some stage, which might as well be in January.

Erik ten Hag considers Gakpo his priority target for January, and the club could launch an official approach. The discussions could take place after the World Cup. The report claims Manchester United have an agreement in principle with Gakpo over a transfer.

Many other top clubs are reportedly watching Gakpo at the World Cup, but the player could now be Manchester United’s to lose. He will cost a fair bit, as PSV would look at what the Red Devils paid for Antony in the summer.

While there are no mentions of fees over €100 million, Manchester United may have to pay around €50 million to get their top target. The Dutchman is a necessary signing for the Red Devils. Considering Jadon Sancho is currently out of favour, he will be a valuable addition to the attack.

Gakpo will bring an edge to their final third action, as he has proven in the Eredivisie with his goals and assists. While Manchester United want to sign him in January, a move will depend on the two clubs agreeing on a fee, something they have not discussed yet.
