Barcelona and Real Madrid could be involved in a transfer tussle in January for Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta.

As per Fichajes, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are targeting a move for Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta. The 33-year-old only signed a new contract extension in the summer extending his association with the club until 2024.

Barcelona had been linked with the Spanish defender who has been a long servant for Chelsea, in the summer. The veteran defender had the chance of moving to his native country but he chose to remain in London.

Despite his new contract, there is a possibility of the player moving out with Chelsea already planning their January transfer targets. Azpilicueta’s former Chelsea teammate Marcos Alonso moved to Nou Camp this summer and the Catalans will revisit Chelsea to renew their interest in the player.

His versatility is something the clubs are looking for as the defender can play anywhere in the backline and will have a seamless transition into the setup. Barcelona will be having another overhaul in January and there will be changes in the ranks.

Real Madrid are also willing to execute their interest in the player and will be looking to secure his services in January. Despite his growing age the Spaniard hasn’t lost his charm and has been a key figure in Graham Potter’s injury-plagued side.

He is currently with the Spanish side in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and he will likely be keenly watched by both of his suitors.

Reece James’ long-standing injury made him miss the England World Cup squad and Azpilicueta has been filling in his absence. It would be difficult for Chelsea to part ways with one of their most hardworking players and the defender might be set for a longer stay at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ player has been one of the most consistent players in the English top flight and they fought heavily to keep him at the club after severe pressure from other clubs in the summer. It would be pretty odd to hand him over in January as all the efforts will go down in vain.
