Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a January swoop for Arsenal and Liverpool striker target Marcus Thuram, whose contract at Borussia Monchengladbach is due to expire next summer.

Newcastle United have reportedly joined Arsenal in the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram. That’s according to The Sun, which reports the Magpies could make a move for the powerful Monchengladbach marksman during the January transfer window and could look to steal a march on the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal for the France international’s signature.

Thuram, the son of France legend Lilian Thuram, has rediscovered his scoring boots this season after largely misfiring the last term. He has scored 10 goals and assisted three in 15 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, capturing the attention of several top sides across the continent, including PSG, Inter Milan, and Bayern Munich.

The France international has been selected in the squad for the Qatar World Cup, and with Karim Benzema forced back home due to a serious injury, Thuram has a genuine chance to make an impact at the competition in order to put himself in the shop window in the winter market.

The Borussia Monchengladbach star’s current contract expires at the end of the season. And recent reports suggest a number of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool, are lining up to pounce in the New Year to land the 6ft 4in powerhouse striker on a cut-price deal. However, they now face competition from cash-rich Newcastle, who are now an attractive proposition for players to sign.

Arsenal, for one, are keen to bolster their squad when the transfer window reopens. Mikel Arteta’s side sits atop the table at the World Cup break thanks to their incredible start to the campaign, winning 12 of their first 14 games to move five points clear.

Now that the Gunners are in a genuine title race, the Arsenal hierarchy are willing to back Arteta in the January transfer window to give their team the best chance of getting to the finish line. There is an understanding that an injury to talisman Gabriel Jesus may wreck their title bid this season, thus adding another out-and-out striker could be a wise decision, making Thuram a viable target.

As for Liverpool, the Reds are going through a transitional phase all across the pitch, with Jurgen Klopp mulling a switch to multi-striker systems. Signing someone of Thuram’s potency would increase the Reds attacking efficiency and unpredictability, which in turn will help them recover from a disappointing start to the season.

Like Arsenal, Newcastle United will certainly be frustrated about the domestic season stopping for the World Cup, especially with their sparkling form this campaign that has seen them leapfrog Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Manchester United into third.

While Newcastle already have potent attacking options, Eddie Howe and co. may feel that a forward recruit will keep them on track to challenge for the top four.

Thuram possesses blistering pace and can play anywhere across the front line. The four-capped France international is the epitome of an explosive striker and is a constant menace for opposing defenders. His flicks, speed of running in behind, and exceptional movement would offer Newcastle another facet to their attacking play.
