Chelsea have joined the battle to rope in PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo, with Manchester United and Arsenal also tracking his progress.
According to 90min, Chelsea have emerged as the latest entrant in the race to sign Cody Gakpo. The west London club will be lining up alongside Manchester United, Arsenal, and others to land the in-demand Dutch attacker.
Gakpo was on the shortlist of Manchester United in the summer transfer window. But PSV Eindhoven’s reluctance paved the way for the Red Devils to make Antony one of their blockbuster summer signings. Nevertheless, Manchester United are still searching for a potential goal hunter, and Gakpo could resolve their problems.
The 23-year-old has lit up the Eredivisie with goal after goal, and it is pretty certain that he will leave the club sooner or later. The latest Cristiano Ronaldo episode, too, has forced Manchester United to accelerate their scouting process, and Gakpo remains one of their targets.
Arsenal also looked at the Dutch international as a possible candidate but backed out from the last-minute transfer. But having controlled the proceedings through in the Premier League this season, Mikel Arteta would demand a couple of players in January, and Gakpo fits the bill perfectly.
The in-demand Dutch attacker is tipped to be the next star at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and his stock could be on the up. A fee in the range of £40 million should be enough to tempt PSV to part ways with their most prized asset.
Chelsea have endured a bad phase under Graham Potter, and if the current situation continues, it will be hard for the Blues to compete for the top four in the top flight. The likes of Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have struggled to convert chances, and the 23-year-old could rescue their campaign.
Despite playing on the left flank, there has not been a dearth of goals, and the forward can be equally effective he has the right resources alongside him. Todd Boehly will likely offer assistance in January as Potter would need more reinforcements to get the campaign back on track. Gakpo is likely to land in the Premier League, and it would be interesting to see who makes the right move first.
