La Liga heavyweights are reportedly closely monitoring the progress of 23-year-old Spanish right-back Pedro Porro at Sporting CP.
According to reputed Spanish journalist Toni Juanmarti, Pedro Porro has emerged on the radar of Barcelona. The Catalan giants are keeping tabs on the progress of the 23-year-old Spanish right-back at Sporting CP. Arnau Martinez is another top target who fits into Barcelona’s budget.
Pedro Porro took some time to burst into the limelight. But the move to Sporting CP has done wonders for his career. The Spaniard first made his name at Girona before joining Manchester City. But the player could not establish a foothold at the Etihad and rose to prominence during his loan stint with Sporting CP.
The 23-year-old, who joined Sporting CP permanently this past summer, has enjoyed a solid 2022/23 season thus far. The Spanish right-back has five assists in 16 appearances. And Porro’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several European bigwigs, including Barcelona.
Porro first came to Barcelona’s attention in the summer transfer window. But financial issues might have forced the Blaugrana to seek cheaper solutions from the market. And they eventually brought in Hector Bellerin on a free transfer on deadline day. But the Spanish right-back has only signed a one-year contract and will likely depart as a free agent next summer.
In addition, Sergi Roberto has seen his performance levels drop dramatically, while fitness issues continue to plague him. So Barcelona will desperately look to sign a top-class right-back next summer. But with their financial woes not a thing of the past yet, they will need cost-effective solutions.
So while Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold are ideal targets, Porro is a more realistic option for Barcelona. According to Toni Juanmarti, the Catalan giants value the 23-year-old’s youth and growth prospects. And in addition to the Spanish right-back, up-and-coming Girona defender Arnau Martinez is also a target.
It will be interesting to see who among the two Spaniards becomes the top target for Barcelona in the coming months. Sporting CP could well seek a premium for Porro, considering his deal runs until June 30, 2025.
