La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly weighing up a move to sign Spanish midfielder Carlos Soler from PSG in January.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Carlos Soler is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The Catalan giants want to sign the Spanish midfielder from PSG in the January transfer window amid his struggles to become a regular for Les Parisiens.
Carlos Soler spent his entire career until this season with Valencia, progressing through the ranks at the club before graduating to the first-team squad over half a dozen years ago. The 25-year-old had been a pivotal figure for Los Che in the last few seasons, performing admirably even as they struggled in La Liga.
But the Spaniard’s stint with Valencia ended this past summer, with PSG signing him on deadline day. However, Soler has started only four games thus far for PSG, chipping in with two goals and one assist. And the player’s struggles suggest he is the next Georginio Wijnaldum. At the same time, it has captured the attention of Barcelona.
Barcelona thought about signing Soler in the summer transfer window but settled on Franck Kessie as the only midfield reinforcement. However, Kessie has struggled to establish a foothold at Spotify Camp Nou, with recent reports linking him with a departure next year.
In addition, Sergio Busquets is approaching the end of his glittering career. Barcelona will thus need to enter the market for a midfield reinforcement next year. While Soler will not be a like-for-like replacement for Busquets, the PSG midfielder is still a viable target for the Blaugrana.
That is because Frenkie de Jong and Kessie can fill Busquets’s void next year. So Soler can add to Xavi Hernandez’s box-to-box midfield options. And according to Fichajes, the Barcelona manager wants to sign the PSG midfielder in the January transfer window.
A winter move seems unlikely despite Soler’s struggles since joining PSG. But it will be interesting to see if Barcelona can secure the services of the Spanish midfielder if they submit an offer to PSG in the January transfer window.
