La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly keen on re-signing Lionel Messi from Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish publication SPORT, Barcelona will aim to accelerate the move to bring Lionel Messi back to Camp Nou. The Catalan giants want to re-sign the Paris Saint-Germain talisman in the January transfer window. But the operation seems nigh on impossible to execute.

Lionel Messi was a name synonymous with Barcelona for much of his career at the club level. While the Argentine wizard started his youth career in his homeland, he rose to prominence at La Masia. And Messi saw his stock skyrocketing during a stint with Barcelona that saw the club and the player enjoy unprecedented success.

The 35-year-old won every trophy available at the club level multiple times while dominating La Liga with Barcelona. And he had an astonishing tally of 672 goals and 303 assists in 778 outings for the Blaugrana. But Messi’s stint with Barcelona ended last year when the Catalan outfit could not hand him a new contract.

The veteran attacker joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer but endured a difficult debut season at Parc des Princes. Messi even saw the PSG fans hurl jeers at him following Les Parisiens’ ouster from the UEFA Champions League last term. But the Argentine magician has turned things around brilliantly this season.

Messi has a brilliant tally of 12 goals and 13 assists in 17 appearances across all competitions for PSG. But the Ligue 1 champions are in a spot of bother of the player’s long-term future as he will enter the final six months of his contract in January. Such a situation has captured the attention of Barcelona.

Recent reports have claimed that the Catalan giants will do everything in their power to bring Messi back to Camp Nou. And according to SPORT, Barcelona will look to re-sign the 35-year-old in the January transfer window.

The Argentine international has previously said that he will take a call on his future after the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And Barcelona will look to turn his head ahead of the January transfer window. But a winter move seems impossible for three reasons.

Firstly, PSG will not let Messi leave midway through the season. In addition, Les Parisiens have a problematic relationship with Barcelona. Finally, as confirmed by Ben Jacobs, Messi might not want to desert PSG in the middle of the campaign. So Barcelona might have to wait until the summer to re-sign the veteran playmaking genius.
