Houssem Aouar is an attractive option in the upcoming window, with Arsenal and Newcastle United among those keen on signing the Frenchman.

According to Fichajes, Houssem Aouar is a target for Premier League pair Arsenal and Newcastle United ahead of the January transfer window. With his contract with Lyon winding down, the French midfielder remains one of the most attractive names in the market.

It is pretty baffling how Houssem Aouar still finds himself at Lyon despite plenty of interest during the summer. A host of clubs were keen on signing the midfielder but could not get an agreement to sign him. As the January transfer window approaches, the 24-year-old is back in the news.

His game time at Lyon has dropped considerably from last season. Aouar has barely played 170 minutes of league football this term across three games. And he is a prime candidate to depart when the January transfer window comes along.

Real Betis were among those interested in the summer, but the financial implications of completing a deal prevented the move. The Spanish outfit could come back with an approach but may face massive competition for the 24-year-old French midfielder.

Arsenal and Newcastle United are among those from the Premier League reportedly maintaining an interest in the Lyon midfielder. Both clubs could make an approach after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Gunners have been keen on bringing in a new midfield addition since last summer. With Granit Xhaka flourishing in a new attack-minded role, Mikel Arteta is considering a defensive-minded midfielder a priority. However, if an opportunity to sign a player like Aouar becomes available, they might go for the signing.

Moreover, Aouar’s links with Arsenal have been present for a few years. The club came close to signing him two summers ago but brought in Thomas Partey instead. Arteta seeks more quality in his squad, with a title push seemingly likely.

They are also linked with an audacious move for Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Serb will be a costly acquisition, so Arsenal may consider Aouar a cheaper alternative. Saving money on one end would allow Arteta to spend on wingers, with a few linked with a move in January.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United want to repeat the trick from the previous winter window when they signed Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon. They might consider bringing in his former teammate Aouar to St. James’ Park if they can attract the 24-year-old.

As things stand, Newcastle United are fourth in the standings. A top-four chase could be a possibility if they continue their brilliant performances. Eddie Howe will look for quality additions to aid their cause, and the 24-year-old French midfielder’s attacking qualities would suit the team.

Aouar could prove a massive addition for both Arsenal and Newcastle United. His potential availability on a cut-price move could entice many others toward the 24-year-old French midfielder.
