Chelsea are set to reward Mateo Kovacic with a brand new contract as the Blues are very happy with his performance so far.
As per the Standard, Chelsea could open contract talks with Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic as they have the desire to keep the player at Stamford Bridge for many more years.
The 28-year-old joined the club in 2018 on a loan deal from Real Madrid initially and the move was made permanent a year later as the midfielder impressed in his stint. Both N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are in their last year of contracts and it is unlikely they will stay beyond the current season.
Kovacic has been well heralded at the West London club and is happy with life in London. He and his wife became the proud parent of a boy back in 2020 and his family is well-settled in London. This could convince him to further extend his association with the club.
Kovacic’s value has been unearthed this season. In the midst of various on and off-field issues, the Croatian has stood tall, providing the necessary control from the middle of the pitch.
Against Manchester United too, he was called up very early in the game as Graham Potter’s men struggled to cope with the intensity of the visitors but the introduction of the midfielder changed the dynamics of the game as Kovacic started to pull strings to deny the visitors enough chances.
United were lucky to scrape out a point and the former Real Madrid midfielder showcased his importance once again when the Blues visited Austria to encounter RB Salzburg.
Kovacic took control in his own hands and even had his name registered on the scoresheet. There aren’t any suitors at this moment for the player, but a player of his quality could be an asset to any team and the West London giants are aware of that.
He will travel to Qatar to take part in the World Cup and could expect an improved offer on the table once he returns after the break. He would love to spend more time in England and if the terms are favourable, an agreement could be reached in no time.
