Chelsea, Manchester City interested in Lionel Messi

Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City are keen on securing a deal for PSG ace Lionel Messi

According to Fichajes, Premier League sides Manchester City and Chelsea are keeping close tabs on the situation surrounding Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentine legend continues to mesmerise the Parc des Princes and set the arena alight with a scintillating performance against Maccabi Haifa last night. With 22 goals and 27 assists in 50 appearances, Messi has settled in well in the number 10 role at PSG.

At 35, Messi is far from his prime and is nearing the end of his career. However, he continues to age like fine wine and his success as a playmaker could lengthen his career by a few years. He continues to pull strings in attack and still has admirers keen to sign him.

Messi is in the final year of his contract in Paris and is yet to make a decision on his future. Any decision from the 35-year-old will only come after the World Cup. Should he choose to move on, Chelsea and Man City are both ready to pounce.

The Blues, under new ownership, are keen to make a splash in the transfer market. A marquee signing appears to be on the agenda at Stamford Bridge with Cristiano Ronaldo also being looked at. Chelsea lacks the edge when it comes to their attack and landing Messi, will be a good move on and off the field.

The same can be said of Man City who are by far the pre-eminent force in English football today. More so, they are managed by Pep Guardiola, the same man who took Messi to massive heights at Barcelona. A reunion for the duo in the latter years of the Argentine’s career could bring their relationship on the field full circle.

Man City already have one of the most clinical strikers in world football, Erling Haaland. The Norwegian could be subjected to a buffet of goals should Messi be brought in to feed him passes. It is fair to say that a move to The Etihad could be a better option for the veteran over the move to Chelsea.

Signing Messi on a free is a no-brainer whether one chooses to see it from the football perspective or the financial standpoint. At the end, where he ends up will fall onto the diminutive playmaker’s shoulders. Once thought to end his career at Barca, he could very well opt for a new challenge and swap Paris for England.
