La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly intensifying their efforts to sign 25-year-old Portuguese international Ruben Neves.

Reputed Spanish journalist Jose Alvarez has told El Chiringuito TV, contacts between Barcelona and Ruben Neves have intensified. The Catalan giants believe they can snap up the 25-year-old Portuguese international for €40 million.

Ruben Neves has come leaps and bounds since joining Wolverhampton Wanderers from FC Porto half a decade ago. The player’s decision to move to an EFL Championship club had raised eyebrows. But he has enjoyed organic growth at the Molineux, establishing himself as one of the most consistent midfielders in Europe.

The 25-year-old has made 223 appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers, chipping in with 26 goals and 12 assists. At the same time, he is a regular for the Portuguese national side. But Neves will enter the final year of his contract next summer, with his situation alerting Barcelona.

Barcelona considered signing Neves in the summer transfer window before focusing on other targets. But theΒ Blaugrana will bolster the midfield department in the 2023 summer transfer window. That is because Sergio Busquets is in the twilight of his career, while Frenkie de Jong continues to face an uncertain future at Spotify Camp Nou.

Neves has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona to succeed Busquets. And according to Jose Alvarez, the Catalan giants have intensified contacts with the 25-year-old Portuguese international. The reputed Spanish journalist has also added that they reckon they can sign him for around €40 million.

Considering Neves will enter the final year of his contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers next summer, €40 million will be a fair price. Meanwhile, recent reports have also claimed that the player’s representatives have offered Neves to Barcelona. So the stars seem to be aligning at the right time for theΒ Blaugrana.

It will be interesting to see how talks between Barcelona and Neves progress. For now, the Catalan giants have stepped up their efforts to sign the 25-year-old Portuguese international. It will also be intriguing if Wolverhampton Wanderers deem €40 million to be enough to sell the player to Barcelona.
