Chelsea could register their interest in AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali as the Blues are in dire need of signing a midfielder.
According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercatoweb, Chelsea are monitoring the progress of AC Milan youngster Sandro Tonali and could make an attempt to entice the player to London. The 22-year-old has had some massive moments in his brief career already and played a pivotal role in Milan’s Serie A triumph last season.
Tonali produced an impressive display in AC Milan’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Chelsea at San Siro. And his unlikely audition should tempt the Blues in making a move for him.
The 22-year-old has grown leaps in bounds since arriving from Brescia in 2021, turning into a more mature player since being handed more freedom by manager Stefano Pioli.
Rafael Leao has been a subject of interest from Chelsea. But it is Tonali who could emerge as the next big thing in Europe. The Italian midfielder can dictate possession from the base of the midfield, and there are very few press-resistant midfielders who can impose restrictions on the opponent players.
With wing-backs being a crucial component in Graham Potter’s plans, signing Tonali will allow them to flourish more as he can switch up play in split seconds. Milan are not in a rush to negotiate any transfer with suitors, as the midfielder has a long-term contract which will see him staying at the club at least until 2027.
But Chelsea have good relations with the Italian giants, when it comes to transfers. A number of players, including Olivier Giroud, Fikayo Tomori and Tiemoue Bakayoko, have moved to San Siro in the last few years.
Tonali has been crucial to Milan’s plans. And with Pioli adamant to defend the Serie A title this term, snatching Tonali would be a tough task for Chelsea. But with N’Golo Kante and Jorginho on the wrong side of 30 and attracting interest from Barcelona, co-owner Todd Boehly might need to break the bank in a bid to welcome the player on English soil.
