Chelsea are poised to extend Mason Mount’s contract, with the 23-year-old playmaker considered the cornerstone of the club’s project.

According to 90min, Chelsea are in advanced talks with Mason Mount to extend his contract at the club. After the recent renewals of Reece James and Armando Broja, the Blues want to lend their attention towards the 23-year-old playmaker and build the project around him.

Mason Mount came through the ranks of Cobham and was considered one of the best talents coming out of the academy. After a spell with Derby County in the Championship under Frank Lampard, he became a regular the Chelsea first team.

Lampard gave Mount a breakthrough at Chelsea. And the 23-year-old playmaker has not looked back since. With his current deal, signed in 2019, set to expire in 2024, the Blues are set to reward him with a new contact.

Chelsea were keen on opening talks before the previous season ended. However, the uncertainty around the club might have prevented those discussions.

However, Mount has always been keen to stay at Chelsea, even as some other clubs glanced admirably towards him. Todd Boehly may have made a name by signing some top players over the last months. But he also remains hell bent on retaining a few names.

For instance, Reece James and Mount are considered the cornerstone of the project earmarked by the American owner. With James already penning a new six-year deal, the focus will now be on the 23-year-old playmaker to renew terms.

The report suggests Chelsea are advancing in their efforts to tie the Englishman down to new terms. If he signs, Mount will become the third player to do so after James and Armando Broja recently penned penned deals. Like the duo, the England international could be in for a long-term contract, probably for six more years.

Both parties seem to be on the same page, and the extension could be formalised soon. There are further plans to build an exciting squad in the coming windows. And re-signing the 23-year-old playmaker on new terms will be essential to Boehly’s plans.
