Barcelona retain interest in Alex Moreno

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly still interested in signing 29-year-old Spanish left-back Alex Moreno from Real Betis.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Alex Moreno is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in a transfer window in 2023. The Spanish defender will be an option to replace Jordi Alba, who Joan Laporta wants to sell soon.

Alex Moreno has come leaps and bounds since joining Real Betis from Rayo Vallecano in August 2019. The 29-year-old has gradually become a pivotal figure for the Andalusian club. In doing so, he has played a big role in Los Verdiblancos’ rise in La Liga in the last three years.

The Spanish left-back has turned out over 100 times thus far for Real Betis, chipping in with six goals and 14 assists. And Moreno’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with several clubs across Europe setting their sights on him. One of his prospective suitors might be Barcelona.

Barcelona showed interest in Moreno in the summer transfer window before signing Marcos Alonso on deadline day. Alonso has settled down well at Camp Nou and has alternated with Alejandro Balde in Barcelona’s starting lineup thus far this season.

But while that is a positive sign for Barcelona, Alonso has only signed a one-year contract with Barcelona. And with Jordi Alba becoming a squad player for the Blaugrana, signing a left-back might be necessary. Speaking of Alba, the veteran left-back has emerged on several clubs’ radar, including Juventus.

The report claims Joan Laporta wants to offload Alba in 2023 before bringing in a new left-back to compete with Balde. Moreno is thus a viable target for Barcelona, with the 29-year-old Spanish defender at the peak of his powers. The Catalan giants also have other Spanish left-backs on their wishlist, including Alejandro Grimaldo and Javi Galan.

A move for Moreno or any other left-back might eventually depend on Alonso’s future at Camp Nou. And it will be interesting to see if the 29-year-old Spanish left-back becomes a top target for Barcelona next year amid uncertainties surrounding Alba’s future.
