La Liga champions Real Madrid are closely monitoring the progress of 18-year-old Portuguese wonderkid Antonio Silva.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Antonio Silva is the subject of interest from Real Madrid over a possible move in a future transfer window. The reigning La Liga champions have put the 18-year-old Portuguese wonderkid on top of their wishlist.

Antonio Silva spent his formative years at three Portuguese clubs before reaching Benfica. It was at Benfica that the teenage prodigy finally found a stable footing before breaking into the first-team setup. And he has made massive strides since making his senior debut this year.

Silva has turned out eight times for Benfica this season, particularly making his mark in the UEFA Champions League. And after an impressive performance against PSG this week, the 18-year-old has captured the attention of several European bigwigs. One of his prospective suitors could be Real Madrid.

The interest from Real Madrid is surprising, considering Antonio Rudiger arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu this past summer. But Nacho and David Alaba are on the wrong side of 30, with the former anyway a backup option. So laying down a long-term succession plan for the defensive unit might bode well for Real Madrid.

Antonio Silva might thus be the ideal candidate for Real Madrid to pursue. Following Raphael Varane’s success at the Bernabeu, Los Blancos might have the blueprint to groom a centre-back to be a long-term central defensive solution. The 18-year-old Portuguese wonderkid is thus a viable target for Real Madrid.

Recent reports have claimed that Milan Skriniar might be an option for Real Madrid next year. But according to Calciomercato, Silva is on top of their wishlist. However, the Italian outlet does not specify whether the reigning La Liga champions will pursue him next summer.
